A Peridynamics-Based Finite Element Method (PeriFEM) and Its Implementation in Commercial FEM Software for Brittle Fractures

The classical finite element method has been successfully applied to many engineering problems but not cases with space discontinuity. A peridynamics-based (PeriFEM) is presented according the principle of minimum potential energy, which enables First, integral domain peridynamics reconstructed, and a new type called peridynamic (PE) defined. Although PEs are generated by continuous elements (CEs) FEM, they do affect each other. Then, spatial discretization performed based on CEs, linear equations about nodal displacement established energy. Besides, cracks characterized degradation mechanical properties PEs. Consequently, PeriFEM reformulation traditional FEM for solving numerically. It considers nonlocal features yet possesses same computational framework as FEM. As result, this implementation benefits from consistent frameworks both After that, we propose first unified strategy in commercial software packages their application programming interface using PeriFEM. Using ANSYS ABAQUS examples, present numerical results details software. codes integrated into verified through benchmark convergence costs compared. show that more efficient some specific whereas criterion adopted robust. Finally, 3D examples demonstrate ability proposed approach deal complex problems.
